What happens when you mix passion, technology and leadership? You win 1st place at the VEX Regional Robotics Competition!
Exactly! Rafik Metri(11th), Joshua Denton(9th), Kayla Terhune(11th), Philip Ho(7th) and Steven Gandham(7th) created, built and deployed their robots in dramatic fashion to annihilate the competition as you can see in the video below.
The Lancers competed against 24 teams from various high schools. Some of the schools had multiple entries as did Grace Brethren Schools. The Lancers teams are mentored by Dave Daunt, Larry Stempke and Olivia Gandham and look at the results. Lancer B finished 10th in the first round which is not bad out of 24 teams. Lancer A finished 1st in the initial round and followed that up with an overall 1st place victory in the single elimination round. If you haven't watched the video yet, it is surprisingly motivational!
But that is not all! VEX judges interviewed each group and both Philip Ho and Steven Gandham received a Judges Award based on the Q&A that occurred within that interview. Their answers impressed the judges and especially so given their grade level (7th) in a primarily high school age competition.
What does it all mean? First, pursing your passion and using your talents to achieve excellence glorifies God. Second, the team gets to do it all over again as they are now qualified to participate in the:
World Vex Championship Disney World, Orlando Florida April 14th - 16th, 2011
This is the first time in 4 years that GBS has qualified for the world championship!
