Lancer Draft Pick
Grace Brethren graduate Sammi Fisher (‘17) had an unexpected surprise during this Christmas season! Sammi found herself rejoicing with her family as she was drafted during the National Women’s Soccer League Draft on December 18th, 2021. The Simi Valley native was drafted 19th overall by the Chicago Red Stars. Fisher has just finished an illustrious career with Notre Dame after reaching the first round of the ACC tournament with Notre Dame. In her playing time, the Irish achieved a top-16 ranking, a top-four finish in the ACC conference (the toughest conference in the country), and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Sammi was a three-time All-ACC selection, earning First Team distinction in 2021. During her career at Notre Dame, she accumulated an astounding 73 points (29 goals and 15 assists).
When asked about her time at Grace Brethren, she shared fond memories of the people who impacted her the most. She attributes her experiences as a student-athlete for helping shape her into the woman she is today. “Ms. Berthelson was a teacher who had a big impact on me. She was always so kind and thoughtful.” About her soccer career as a Lancer, she said “Coach Allegra was someone who helped me to really enjoy soccer and let go on the field.” This must have been a successful strategy as Sammi helped lead her team to two CIF-SS Soccer Championships and two Southern California finals (2016, 2017).
Sammi hopes to finish her Master’s degree in business this May as she begins this new chapter in life as a professional athlete with the Red Stars.
